Bus driver training

Request ID: FOI-3903-2324
Date published: 29 February 2024

You asked

Could you let me know what training bus drivers are given, or is mandated to bus operating companies, on how to deal with crimes committed on buses, or on evidence (e.g. somebody talking about committing a crime within earshot of the driver) they may encounter in their job?

We answered

Our Ref:         FOI-3903-2324

Thank you for your request received on 2 February 2024 asking for information about bus driver training.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.

Following the sealing of drivers’ cabs during the height of the COVID pandemic in 2020, drivers are able to hear less what is being said within the bus by customers.

However, if a driver hears something of the nature described, or something is brought to their attention, there is a process whereby the driver would bring the matter to the attention of their controller or our central control centre where policing partners can be alerted. This might potentially be after the individual(s) have left the bus if it is felt that it could be dangerous to do so when they are on the bus – either way the driver would be guided if they need to do anything further plus the police and other agencies would be able to secure good quality CCTV to follow-up on the situation.

We are rolling out sexual harassment training to our frontline customer service staff to help them respond to reports, support customers and colleagues and challenge behaviour where necessary. Training for our enforcement officers and bus operations teams is now complete. Equality, Diversity and Inclusion training, which includes modules including Violence Against Women and Girls, developed through engagement with a number of stakeholder groups, will be rolled out to 25,000 bus drivers.

If this is not the information you are looking for please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
