Blocked drain on the Newington Causeway

You asked

Hi team, Just following up on this. My third report was made on 5 Jan. It's 22 Jan now and the bike lane and left-hand car lane were again flooded this morning. Can you please clarify when you're actually going to solve this situation? In your email you state "I've raised your request with our specialist team. They will instruct their contractors to visit the site and to check the drains as soon as they're able." but this is extremely vague. Where are we in the process? What date was this raised with the specialist team? What date did the specialist team instruct their contractors? When are the contractors going out to the site to check the drains? When are the drains going to be fixed so the sections stops flooding? Can you please provide actual data? It's really difficult to hold TfL accountable with such a non-committal response. Every time the bike lane floods, cyclists have to merge into regular traffic. Drivers do not expect this. Are you waiting for the first accident or casualty to happen before you solve this? I appreciate your swift and comprehensive response. Thanks,

TfL Ref: FOI-3852-2324

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 22 January 2024 asking for information about a blocked drain on the Newington Causeway.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require.

TfL would like to apologise for the handling of the reported issue and the sequence of events which has now been investigated. Unfortunately these works and subsequent follow-ups were not conducted as diligently as they should have been. In order to address the issue raised, contractors have been deployed to thoroughly inspect and clean all gullies in segregated cycle lanes. We can confirm that the necessary maintenance has been completed, and the water flow has been restored to its proper functioning. Furthermore, the relevant team will be monitoring the location weekly until the end of March to ensure that there are no further flooding incidents.

The safety of our customers is TfL’s number one priority so our procedures have now been revised and our operational teams have been instructed to conduct thorough investigations for all Streetcare cases before closing. As a matter of course all necessary actions will be followed up to ensure satisfactory completion of the works carried out.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely,
