Hello I would like to request information on noise levels (in herts possibly) on trains trams and buses. I understand some lines will be quieter then others, however I would to request the latest readings for both lowest and highest levels. On average how often is this tested?

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-3780-2324

Thank you for your clarified request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 3 February 2024 asking for information about noise levels on trains, trams and buses.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require.

Please see the requested information attached for the Bakerloo Line.

The most up to date information for the Central Line is available on our website using the following link: https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/transparency/freedom-of-information/foi-request-detail?referenceId=FOI-2986-2324

Please also see attached data for the average, minimum and maximum noise levels at different frequency bands for the Jubilee and Victoria lines for 2023.

The team have also provided noise reports for the Hammersmith & City Line (2020), and Piccadilly Line (2021) which provide some frequency data which may be of use to you.

There is no requirement to carry out annual noise measurements of an entire line. We do, however, carry out measurements on lines in known noise locations. TfL continues to invest significantly in track renewal and maintenance, including a continuous programme of rail grinding and track modernisation. We have undertaken a significant amount of noise and vibration-related rail grinding in the last six months and will continue to carry out other targeted interventions to reduce noise. In addition to this, TfL also uses lubrication to manage friction between the wheels and rails.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely,
