TfL Ref: 3739-1920
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 4 March 2020 asking for information about bus luggage storage areas.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. Your questions and our relies are as follows:
- How many TfL buses have a luggage area?
All buses in the fleet have a small area normally near to the front near-side wheel arch to stow portable items such as shopping. When the wheelchair bay is free, it can be possible to put large bags there. Buses are not designed to accommodate large items of luggage as there main purpose is to enable passengers to hop on and off over short distances and as coaches and shuttle services provide more customised options. Where possible, we try to provide slightly more room for bags on buses that terminate or pass nearby airports.
- How many TfL buses do not have a luggage area?
See above.
3. How many TfL buses have a Metro Newspaper (Daily Mail Group) stand?
Operators such as Go Ahead, Arriva and Abellio have made arrangements with newspaper distributions to provide free newspapers on board. We do not hold details of how many buses this involves in our 9,000-strong fleet. We did previously track feedback following this change and found slightly more customers were in favour of obtaining the Metro than were against papers being put in the baggage rack.
If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.
