Request ID: FOI-3523-1920
Date published: 16 March 2020
You asked
Dear Sir/Madam,
Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, I would like to know
• The number of Santander Cycles that needed to be replaced because they were lost, stolen or faulty
If possible I would like this data broken down by the three categories (lost, stolen or faulty) as a total for each of the last five years, with a year end of December 31 or whatever year end is used internally.
If you are unable to provide five years of data, please provide three years of data, otherwise please provide data for the last two years.
If it looks as if the work involved in responding to this FOI is going to exceed the time permitted under the FOIA then please contact me as soon as possible to discuss how I can reduce the scope of this request.
If you have any questions or need further clarification, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Our ref: FOI-3523-1920/GH
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 17 February 2020 asking for information about Santander cycles.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you require.
The figures below show bikes which were replaced during those years:
- The reason for the increase in 2017 is due to the contract re-let falling in this period which identified 300 missing bikes which should have been decommissioned throughout the years back to the start of the scheme in 2010.
- The increase in lost bikes in 2019 is thought to be due to an increase in crime and change in customer behaviour following the launch of dockless bikes.

TfL is committed to reducing the number of lost and stolen bikes. It is improving the location accuracy of the Santander Cycles fleet by installing GPS trackers, making it easier for lost or stolen bikes to be identified and swiftly recovered. Updates have also been made to the Santander Cycles app, which has generated more than 4.6m hires since it was launched in 2015, to make it possible for registered customers to report lost or abandoned bikes to TfL. Anyone who finds a lost or abandoned Santander Cycle should report it using the app, on the TfL StreetCare website at https://streetcare.tfl.gov.uk/ or call Customer Services on 0343 222 1234.
