To Whom It May Concern, I would like to make a request under the Freedom of Information Act (2000). Could you please present a list of the following: • Any exhibits that have been damaged or destroyed while in your care from 20/03/2010 to date. • A short description of the damage done, followed by a description of any repairs. • The date on which the item was damaged. • The cost of any repair. • A picture of the item – before and after it was damaged*. *If this final point will take me over the cost limit, then please feel free to exclude it. However, I would request you inform me first. I would prefer your response to be delivered electronically. Please send confirmation that you have received this email and do not hesitate to contact if there are any problems.

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request of 20th March 2019 asking for information about damaged exhibits in the TfL museum collection.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require.

Specifically you asked:

Could you please present a list of the following:

  • Any exhibits that have been damaged or destroyed while in your care from 20/03/2010 to date.
  • A short description of the damage done, followed by a description of any repairs.
  • The date on which the item was damaged.
  • The cost of any repair.
  • A picture of the item – before and after it was damaged.

The information to answer your first four questions is shown in the table below – this is from 20/03/2010 to date. In answer to your last question, pictures of these items (where held) are attached (10 of which relate to a single object - vehicle number B43). The number in the image file name relates to the object number in the table. Most incidents relate to vehicles on public display that have been damaged by the actions of visitors or are subject to general wear and tear.

A gradual problem since the bus was installed.

Damage to maroon rexine covering the platform stair area and rear blind box. Initially caused by clothes rubbing against the surfaces as visitors ascend/descend the stairs and once frayed gets pulled at by visitors.

Repairs not yet attempted due to non-availability of the original material and the original pieces are believed to have been heat moulded to fit the curved surfaces.

Two small chips and dents in offside front wing caused by falling rope barrier pole. Several chips of black paint noticed on top behind front bumper bracket.

19/03/2018

Battery box door fallen off or pulled away by a visitor and smashed on floor. Door was previously damaged and and detachable, now in several pieces.

Conservation undertaken by Content Engineering Limited: Latches removed from each side and made operational. Door parts consolidated and two tenons replaced so it is structurally complete. Hinges made operational. New timber section made and scarfed to the surviving baseboard of the box, including the drainage holes and groove. Base strapped de-acidified and repainted. Box reassembled in-situ and attached to bus. Coated with micro-crystalline wax.

Small hole in the middle of the poster, crease at the top right hand side and tear at the bottom left hand side. This damage was caused while trying to remove the poster from its acrylic frame after the Designology exhibition.

Railway vehicle; Metropolitan Railway "Bogie Stock" coach No 400, 1900

March 2019

Crack in upper right hand corner (as viewed from the gallery) of a compartment drop light window well away from public access. Stress in the drop light frame is the most likely cause.

No repair attempted yet. A spare droplight may be available so cost of repair may be negligible.
