FOI request detail

deployment of new rolling stock on the Enfield town branch

Request ID: FOI-3452-1819
Date published: 02 April 2019

You asked

In mid 2018, you provided me with a rough timeline for the deployment of new rolling stock on the Enfield town branch (“TfL hopes to start this roll out programme by the end of the year and will be able to provide more accurate information nearer the time” - https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/increased_frequency_trains_to_en#incoming-1181961). In the same request, you indicated that plans to increase the frequency on the line “have not been progressed further to date”. As we’re now well in to the new year, I would like to request an update on the situation. - What is the latest available information relating to readiness / testing of the new rolling stock? - when does TfL now anticipate deployment of this new rolling stock to the Enfield town branch? - what is the latest information available regarding the proposal to increase the frequency of trains on this branch line? Many thanks for your reply,

We answered

TfL Ref: 3452-1819

Thank you for your request received by us on 18 March 2019 asking for information about Increased frequency and new rolling stock on Enfield town branch of the London Overground.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold the information you require.  Your request and our replies are as follows:

- What is the latest available information relating to readiness / testing of the new rolling stock?

Testing continues on the new rolling stock. There remains some software issues to be resolved, once these are resolved, we will confirm when the trains will enter passenger service.

-when does TfL now anticipate deployment of this new rolling stock to the Enfield town branch?

As previously stated, once Transport for London is satisfied that the new trains are operating reliably on the Gospel Oak to Barking route, it will start introducing them to services on the Watford-Euston route and then services out of Liverpool Street to Cheshunt, Chingford and Enfield Town. Testing continues on the new rolling stock. There remains some software issues to be resolved, once these are resolved, we will confirm when the trains will enter passenger service on these routes.

-what is the latest information available regarding the proposal to increase the frequency of trains on this branch line?

As stated previously, the progression of these service changes requires integration with Greater Anglia’s proposals for its revised service patterns as the two sets of services share infrastructure at certain points on the network.  We understand that Greater Anglia is now in the process of finalising its proposed services so we hope to be able to engage shortly. However, there is expected to be no opportunity for increasing peak services as there is insufficient spare capacity into Liverpool Street, according to Network Rail.
