Ridership data

Request ID: FOI-3414-1819
Date published: 25 March 2019

You asked

Hi, In 2015 there was a FOI request for daily ridership data categorised by mode of transport and ticket type (https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/daily_ridership_volumes_across_t) from 2003. I am writing to request a similar data set, but going back as far as possible and up to the most recent data. In addition, could you please provide clear notes on how the data is collected (for example, is it an exact count averaged over each counting period? are some days sampled for counting? how has the methodology changed over time? etc). Finally, to the best of my understanding this data was/is not released under an open use license. However, we would like to use the data in an undergraduate coursework task. Please could we have permission to do so? Many thanks

Please find the requested data attached, going back to 2000, as far back as we hold data for.

In addition, could you please provide clear notes on how the data is collected (for example, is it an exact count averaged over each counting period? are some days sampled for counting? how has the methodology changed over time? etc).

For journeys made using Oyster cards and Contactless Payment cards, the data is collected automatically by the back office system.

For paper tickets sales data is used in combination with a large scale rolling survey, which is used to estimate journeys per ticket for each ticket type, to estimate journey volumes.

Finally, to the best of my understanding this data was/is not released under an open use license. However, we would like to use the data in an undergraduate coursework task. Please could we have permission to do so?

It is fine to use the data for your coursework.
