Request ID: FOI-3407-2223
Date published: 03 April 2023

You asked

How many passengers have been injured by closing doors? Clarification received 20/03/2023: I would like to know how much of a problem tube doors cause for passengers so would like to know how many incidents involving tube doors there are on the whole network. To give a reliable estimate of the problem would you be able to provide this for the last 12 months?

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-3407-2223

Thank you for your request of 14th March 2023 asking for information about passengers injured by closing doors on the London Underground.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

Specifically you asked:

How many passengers have been injured by closing doors?”

On 20th March you clarified that this relates to the entire London Underground network for the last 12 months.

I can confirm that we hold the information you require.

From 1 March 2022 up to and including 28 February 2023, 161 injuries relating to closing doors were recorded on the London Underground. Based on the description of the incidents provided by station staff who reported and recorded the incidents, approximately three quarters of the injuries occurred as a result of customers being caught or struck by closing doors. The remaining injuries relate to slips, trips and falls that occurred at the platform train interface as train doors were closing. Three of the 161 injuries were classified as serious. All remaining injuries were classified as minor. Note that there are several million individual journeys taken on the London Underground on a typical day.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.
