Follow-on from FOI-2983-2324: I wondered what the latest figures were for how many people have taken the course? How much does TfL contribute in total to Protection Approaches? (2023, 2022 and any past or future spending)

We answered

Our Ref:         FOI-3402-2324

Thank you for your request received on 28 December 2023 asking for further information about the charity, Protection Approaches.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.

During National Hate Crime Awareness Week in October, TfL partnered with Protection Approaches and Britain's East and South East Asian Network (BESEAN)  to provide free active bystander training to support TfL and the Mayor’s zero-tolerance approach to all forms of hatred and prejudice.

The training aimed to help people feel more confident and equipped to act if they see a hate crime taking place. Protection Approaches and BESEAN were chosen to deliver the training as they are leading organisations in delivering hate crime active bystander training and funded by the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC).

TfL paid Protection Approaches £4,550 to deliver the training sessions. The attendance for each session was capped at 35 people to ensure the participants were able to get fully involved in the sessions. There were 344 sign ups in to the session and in total 219 people received the training over the 10 sessions.

The expert-led sessions saw participants guided through a series of discussions to explore how they can play a role in safely tackling identity-based harms in their community, school, or place of work.

Please note that there was an error in our previous response, it should have read 200 Londoners have already benefitted from the training. I apologise for this error.
