I note that a number of timber planters are installed on raised kerbed traffic islands on A201 near Blackfriars Bridge. Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 3 February 2020 asking for information about timber planters installed on raised kerbed traffic islands on A201 near Blackfriars Bridge.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold the information you require. You asked: Under the Freedom of Information Act, please can you advise what highway legislation has been utilised to permit the installation of these objects / structures on the highway traffic islands.

TfL has powers under the Highways Act 1980 (S.62 & 96) to plant trees, shrubs and other vegetation and laying out of grass verges on the highway provided that they do not hinder the reasonable use of the highway.
