Free travel for Special Constables

Request ID: FOI-3341-2223
Date published: 22 March 2023

You asked

I am aware that TfL permits free travel on its services for certain police forces in London and the home counties. My query relates to volunteer Special Constables. It was my understanding that only volunteer Special Constables in the Metropoiltan Police, The City of London Police and the London based British Transport Police received free travel on TfL. Can you confirm whether this concession has been extended to Special Constables serving in other forces such as Essex Police? I know that regular Essex Police officers get free travel but do Essex Specials get it as well?

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-3341-2223

Thank you for your request received by us on 9 March 2023 asking for information about free travel on TfL services for Special Constables.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold the information you require.

Police Oyster cards allow some Police Officers, Special Constables, and Police Community Support Officers to travel free on bus, Tube, tram, DLR, London Overground and Elizabeth line services.

However, Special Constables need to be London based to qualify for free travel, unless they are British Transport Police Special Constables.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
