Our Ref: FOI-3306-2324
Thank you for your request received on 18 December 2023 asking for further information about bus mirror injuries. Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. You asked: • Where did each incident take place? Ie. is there any information collected such as borough or bus route? If so, can this be provided in reference to each of the incidents. Please see attached for a file containing detail on bus wing mirror incidents including borough and route detail. Please note where ‘unknown’ is listed this is because this information was not provided/recorded. • What was the change that took place in the reporting system for bus safety incidents. Ie. was it related to the Vision Zero plans, or another change in reporting? The change made was to our injury information collection process and process of defining injury severity. This was to ensure more consistency in our reporting and in tracking against Vision Zero targets. • Regarding the 1,113 buses which have been fitted, and that you are seeking to retrofit CMS to existing buses. Which buses / bus routes have received CMS fittings? When would retrofitting start taking place on existing buses? All new vehicles entering the London bus fleet have been required to have Camera Monitoring System (CMS) since 2021 as part of our Bus Safety Standard (BSS). There are currently 1199 buses fitted with CMS (December 2023 figures) and as new buses enter the fleet, this figure will continue to increase. We do not hold route-level data on which routes have buses fitted with CMS through the Bus Safety Standard. This is because vehicles are sometimes used on different routes according to operational requirements, and because some routes are currently serviced by a mix of CMS and non-CMS equipped vehicles. Our programme to retrofit CMS to existing buses in the fleet will mean the proportion of buses in the fleet with CMS will increase more quickly. There are 998 New Route Masters (NRMs) and 445 non-NRM buses in scope for the CMS retrofit. Funding is in place for the first tranche of 445 buses and fitment is expected to start in early 2024. Retrofitting the remaining buses is dependent on future funding. If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me. Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.
Yours sincerely
