Cycling policy and transport policy to post on the Stop Killing Cyclists Facebook group

You asked

Please could we have details of your cycling policy and transport policy to post on the Stop Killing Cyclists Facebook group. The SKC group has 7,300 members. Many of us also belong to other cycling groups so we are in touch with a lot of London cyclists. As was done in the 2019 election manifestos, it would be great to have your investment target on a pounds/head/year basis (eg "I will invest £125/head/year in cycle infrastructure and raise London's cycling mode share to 41% in 7 years"). Alternative investment levels and mode share targets are shown on the chart attached to this email. By investing £35/head/year from 2004 to 2016, Copenhagen raised its cycling mode share by 21% (ie from 20% to 41%= 1.5%/year). In view of the climate emergency, and also for health, economic and environmental reasons, SKC supports the UN recommendation that 20% of the transport budget should go to Non-Motorised Transport (NMT). With a Benefit:Cost Ratio (CBR) of up to 50:1, this would provide extraordinarily good value for money. When it has a mode share of 41% the Londonwide Cycleway Network will transport 10.8 billion passengers/year, safely, quietly, beautifully and environmentally. Rail is the optimum transport mode for long journeys. Cycling is the optimum transport mode for journeys of less than 5 miles (= 50% of all trips in Greater London). For half the cost of Crossrail 1, and in two mayoral terms, London could have a Copenhagen-style cycleway network . There is also a chart comparing the costs and benefits of London transport modes attached to this email.
