Passenger usage the London Underground

You asked

I am currently working on my undergraduate dissertation project on the thesis: "To what extent did the development of the London Underground affect companies' performance. To enhance my answer to this question, it would be very helpful for me to get hold of figures of the passenger usage of all London Underground stations since 1863, the opening of the Metropolitan line, to the early 20th century. Thank you very much!

We answered

Your enquiry has been forwarded to us in the TfL Corporate Archives team by our colleagues in Freedom of Information.

The best place I can advise you to start with your research is with our collection of annual reports dating between 1934-2003 as they contain statistical returns on passenger usage and financial statistics. For an overview of this part of our collection you can search our online catalogue. http://www.tflcorporatearchivescatalogue.co.uk/CalmViewA/

  1. Select Advanced search and put LT000258/004/001 into the ArchiveRefNum field. This will return the higher level description for our annual reports.

  2. Click the ArchiveRefNum LT000258/004/001 to open the full entry.

  3. Click it again in the SysId field (if you hover over this is will say “Browse record in hierarchy”).

  4. Click the plus sign to the left of 004 Investor Relations

  5. Click the plus sign by 001 Annual Reports and Statements of Accounts and a full list of all annual reports will present.

In addition to this resource you may also be interested in a recent accession we received which is an early card index data set which of passenger usage and financial statistics of the companies brought together under the LPTB umbrella in 1933. It appears to have been collated to provide an overview of the company before formation. It references where the original data has been sourced from. As this is uncatalogued the only reference we have at present is the accession number: Acc.2018/030.

If you would like to consult any of the mentioned sources, or additional material you find from searching our online catalogue, you would be very welcome to visit our search room as a researcher. Our search room is open Monday-Friday 10:00-16:30 by appointment (as our collections are store off site so need to be ordered and delivered in advance) and is located above our head office building at 55 Broadway above St James’s Park Station.

If you would like to book an appointment of have any additional queries please don’t hesitate to contact us.
