We answered

Our ref: FOI-3270-2324

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 13 December 2023 asking for information about the Central line shortages.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy.

I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.

The shortages of trains on the Central line for November and December 2023 are mainly down to a lack of materials and therefore, having to stop trains as they’re unable to run. We have DC motors currently fitted to the Central Line trains and we’ve experienced a high casualty/failure rate of these. We are in the process of changing these out, but again the suppliers are having difficulty keeping up the repairs due to the high number. It is worth noting as part of our overhaul program these DC motors will be changed out to AC, which are much more reliable.

If you are not satisfied with this response please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely,
