You asked

As you know any equipment on Taxis must be approved and tested before being placed into the Taxi. Can you inform me of the dates, locations and tests carried on the approved card readers before approval was given.

Our Ref:         FOI-3262-2223

Thank you for your request received on 20 February 2023 asking for information about card readers in taxis.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require.

Each applicant submits their proposal giving an overview of the system and its functionality.

They provide:

•           Details of the card payment device (CPD), CE certification, compliance to the payment card industry data security standards (PCI DSS)
•           Details of the printer, including CE certification
•           Details of the mounting solutions
•           Wiring diagrams of the installation to ensure conformity of installation
•           Details of who carries out the installation
•           Confirmation of the company processing the payments registration with FCA (compliance to PSD2 regulations)
•           We review the information to confirm compliance and the registration of devices and suppliers/companies providing the service

When the documentation review is complete and verified, we carry out a physical inspection of each taxi model to ensure the mounting position and method of installation is secure and will not pose a danger to passengers.

As part of the inspection the presenter takes us through the payment process, a physical payment is witnessed including receipt printing.

Please find attached a spreadsheet detailing the CPD provider and date of approval since the card payment mandate was introduced. Please note that some have been superseded.

We do not record information on the location the inspection took place.
