London Overground deployment of new rolling stock on the Enfield town branch
Request ID: FOI-3248-1920
Date published: 05 February 2020
You asked
Dear Transport for London,
In mid 2018, you provided me with a rough timeline for the deployment of new rolling stock on the Enfield town branch - https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/increased_frequency_trains_to_en#incoming-1181961).
In the same response, you indicated that plans to increase the frequency on the line “have not been progressed further to date”.
In 2019 you indicated that the deployment on the Liverpool Street-Enfield Town branch, was delayed as testing was ongoing elsewhere on the network (https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/increased_frequency_and_new_roll#incoming-1340495).
As we’re now in in 2020, I would like to request an update on the situation.
- What is the latest available information relating to readiness / testing of the new rolling stock?
- when does TfL now anticipate deployment of this new rolling stock to the Enfield town branch?
- what is the latest information available regarding the proposal to increase the frequency of trains on this branch line? Specifically, to increase from 2 TPH off-peak to 3 or even 4 TPH.

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 27 January 2020 asking for information about Increased frequency and new rolling stock on the Enfield town branch of the London Overground.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require. your questions and our replies are as follows:
What is the latest available information relating to readiness / testing of the new rolling stock? Testing has commenced but there are still some software challenges to be resolved. We are working closely with Bombardier to resolve these as soon as possible.
When does TfL now anticipate deployment of this new rolling stock to the Enfield town branch? We anticipate new rolling stock will go into service this Spring.
What is the latest information available regarding the proposal to increase the frequency of trains on this branch line? Specifically, to increase from 2 TPH off-peak to 3 or even 4 TPH. TfL is reviewing the case for an increase in off peak frequency on the Enfield and Cheshunt route. There are a number of factors we are having to take into account including affordability and devising a timetable that would work reliably when combined with those of the other train operators in the region.
