Incident at West Ham Station

Request ID: FOI-3231-2223
Date published: 24 March 2023

You asked

In Mid 2020, a North African of Muslim appearance was grabbed by the neck on the C2C platforms at West Ham Station after exiting the lift. He was then pushed towards the tracks, after some verbal communications, before the assailant boarded a train and escaped. The incident was immediately addressed by staff and members of British Transport Police (BTP) then attended from their base one station away in Stratford. CCTV was collectively reviewed in the control room by the gateline, which showed the whole incident and clearly identified the perpetrator. Despite the seriousness of this crime (racially aggravated attempted murder), BTP refused to download oyster data and CCTV footage, allowing it to expire. It has recently transpired that this may have been a state sanctioned incident by a state actor through leaked documents within the Investigatory Powers Tribunal and other courts, and thus was covered up by the British Transport Police. Please disclose all information you have on this incident, including incident reports, insurance reports, and communications with the police and other state authorities.
