FOI request detail

Trademark and DLR announcements

Request ID: FOI-3214-2223
Date published: 14 March 2023

You asked

Dear Transport for London, I am developing a game, and have some questions. 1. Is the font copyrighted? I will be using a similar font, and I am interested in whether I can use it. The font will be used for station names, directions in stations, announcements, and information... 2. As I know the roundel is copyrighted, I will be using a shape with the bar through it. Are the names of the stations, and lines copyrighted/trademarked and I can't write them through my shape? 3. As I am specifically focusing on the DLR for now, is it possible to get the announcements? I do know, that you are unable to provide me with sound files, but is it possible to get scripts for them? I will make sure that players will be well aware of the fact, that we are not affiliated with you (TfL).

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-3214-2223

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 3rd March 2023 asking for information about fonts and announcement scripts used on the Docklands Light Railway.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

Specifically you asked:

I am developing a game, and have some questions.

I do know, that you are unable to provide me with sound files, but is it possible to get scripts for them?”

I can confirm that we hold the information you require.

In answer to your first two questions, note that both the roundel and the font are copyrighted. Any use of TfL Brand Intellectual Property (IP) by a third party requires a licence. Further information on this and the process for getting a license can be found on the TfL brand IP section of our website via the following link:

https://tfl.gov.uk/info-for/suppliers-and-contractors/using-tfl-brand-ip

In answer to your third question, please find copies of the DLR announcement scripts attached.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely,
