bus operator guidance on curtailment

Request ID: FOI-3188-2324
Date published: 20 December 2023

You asked

A copy of the guidance we've provided to our bus operators, saying they're permitted to curtail routes short of their final destinations to minimise delays.

We answered

TfL Ref: 3188-2324

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 28 November 2023 asking for information about bus operator’s policy on curtailment.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  You asked for a copy of the policy that permits bus operators to curtail buses in relation specifically to bus route 405 to Redhill.

We do not hold the information you have requested as there is no specific policy covering what you have asked for; however services to Redhill should not be curtailed unless it is running with another linked on-time service, and that any curtailment necessary to reset the service should only be towards Croydon. This is done as the route 405 is the only service to Redhill whilst at the Swan there are numerous onward services available to complete a journey over the common section thus minimising the negative impact to passengers.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
