We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-3164-2324

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 4th December 2023 asking for information about the escalators at Wanstead station.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

Specifically you asked:

Please could you inform me:-

1) In the last three months how many days have the escalators not been fully functional  for at least part of the day at Wanstead Station.

2) In the last three months how many times have engineers/technicians attended Wanstead Station to inspect or work on the escalators.”

I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require.

Like all of our assets such as trains and track, we have a continual programme of maintenance, renewal and replacement of our escalators to ensure they are safe and reliable to use for our customers. Such works can be lengthy due to the size and difficulty of the task, in addition to the tight working environments to undertake the work. We continue to look at ways to reduce the amount of disruption to our customers while we undertake escalator works. We also continue to invest in vital improvements to the transport network including making more stations fully accessible across London.

In answer to Question 1, since 4th September 2023 there have been 27 days when an escalator at the station has not been fully functional for at least part of the day.

In answer to Question 2, TfL does not hold this exact information. While we hold a record of when faults were reported and when they were resolved, and hence we know how long a fault lasted (which at times spans several days), we do not have a specific record of how often an engineer would have visited the site. Engineers may come and go in resolving a fault, possibly attending the site more than once in a single day or, at other times, it may have taken several days to resolve a fault and there may have been days in that time when no engineer was in attendance (for example, due to wait times for bespoke parts). We therefore do not hold the information necessary to answer the question.

If this is not the information you are looking for please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely,
