TfL Ref: FOI-3153-1920

Thank you for your further request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 20 January 2020 asking for information about Oyster codes.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our Information Access Policy. You asked:

Can you also provide the message or code seen by a bus driver when the card is presented on a bus reader and the prompt seen by revenue inspectors when the card is presented on an exit reader at a tube station.

There are no codes displayed on the Driver’s Ticket Machine just messages. I have attached a document which details the possible messages, these can be seen in the Short Text column. These messages are resident within the Bus ticketing system and will be displayed to the Driver, depending of course on the status of the card and product on the card which is being presented to a Bus Reader.

If an Oystercard is presented on an exit gate at a tube station and is valid and read correctly by the reader, staff would not receive any specific code.  They would only receive an indication if the card was rejected due to not being valid, or was not read by the reader.  The various codes that are then reported would in most cases be the same as those shown for other types of card that are rejected by a gate.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely,

Melissa Nichols
