Request ID: FOI-3150-2324 Date published: 20 December 2023
You asked
I am writing to you today to request information and proof regarding the cessation of the use of asbestos on your Underground trains.
Also to add If possible I would like to request some specific invoices relating to servicing and parts replacements inc brake components from the period when chrysolite was still commonly being used in brakes, from around and prior to the period of the total asbestos import ban in 1999
To clarify I am looking for information from the year or prior to 1999 that you have stopped using asbestos in brakes. This can be shown through invoices displaying the manufacturer of the replacement braking components upon servicing for example new Brake Discs and Brake Pads.
I would also be interested to know wether you acknowledge the past use of Crocidolite Asbestos or any other type (excluding Chrysolite which has already been mentioned in the email) in the servicing or manufacturing of your underground trains and upon what component/s this type of Asbestos was present on your Trains.

Thank you for your email which we received on 3 December 2023, asking for information about asbestos on London Underground trains.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations (EIRs) and our information access policy.
As you asked for historic information from before 1999, I have passed your request to my colleagues in Corporate Archives and they confirmed that they hold asbestos material, including monitoring, identification and removal. They will contact you separately to advise how you can view the files.
If you are not satisfied with this response please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.
Yours sincerely
