Faulty trains on Central Line - October 2018-January 2019

Request ID: FOI-3086-1819
Date published: 12 March 2019

You asked

Hello, Could you please tell me: How many trains were taken out of service on the Central Line due to being defective/a fault on each day between 01 October 2018 and 31 January 2019, and on which occasions these led to either minor delays, severe delays or suspensions on the line? Many thanks.

We answered

Our ref: FOI-3086-1819/GH

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 14 February 2019 asking for information about the Central line.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold some of the information you require.

Please find attached a spreadsheet showing the number of Train Withdrawals on the Central Line for the dates requested.

At peak times the Central line operates up to 78 trains in passenger service. Therefore the withdrawal of a few trains would generally be absorbed across the line without any notable impact to services. On the 19 October 2018, a total of 7 trains were withdrawn during the day (the highest amount during the 3 month period). However a good service was advertised the whole day. Whilst a train may be withdrawn from service for a defect, it does not mean the train will be out of service for the rest of the day. Therefore if 4 trains are withdrawn during a day, it does not necessarily mean that 4 trains will be missing from passenger service at the same time.

In terms of the impact and whether a train withdrawal causes suspensions, minor delays or severe delays, it is usually not possible to link such problems to one particular incident. It is therefore not possible to answer this part of your request without analysing each incident individually.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for some reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

If you are not satisfied with this response please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
