FOI request detail

Number of 20 mph cameras at 31 Dec for each year since 2000

Request ID: FOI-3085-2324
Date published: 19 December 2023

You asked

Dear Sir or Madam, I would be very grateful for any help with this Freedom of Information Act request. Please could you tell me two things: (1) how many speed cameras were installed and active in Greater London at 31 December for each year from 31 December 2000 to 31 December 2022; and (2) how many speed cameras calibrated to record images for vehicles travelling above the 20mph limit, where that limit was applicable, were installed and active in Greater London at 31 December for each year from 31 December 2000 to 31 December 2022?

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-3085-2324

Thank you for your request which we received on 27 November 2023, asking for information about speed cameras.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. You asked:

(1) how many speed cameras were installed and active in Greater London at 31 December for each year from 31 December 2000 to 31 December 2022; and

Please find the requested information in the attached table. Each row represents one camera. Some cameras were installed and then upgraded at a later date to a digital camera, whereas some were first installed during the digital rollout, which is indicated by a blank entry in the initial install date column.

(2) how many speed cameras calibrated to record images for vehicles travelling above the 20mph limit, where that limit was applicable, were installed and active in Greater London at 31 December for each year from 31 December 2000 to 31 December 2022?

A lot of cameras were installed on roads which have subsequently had their speed limit reduced to 20mph. Unfortunately, we do not hold dates of the 20mph rollouts. In order to answer this part of your request, we would have to manually collate this information for the last 23 years, which would exceed the ‘appropriate limit’ of £450 set by the Freedom of Information (Appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations 2004.

Under section 12 of the FOI Act, we are not obliged to comply with a request if we estimate that the cost of determining whether we hold the information, locating and retrieving it and extracting it from other information would exceed the appropriate limit. This is calculated at £25 per hour for every hour spent on the activities described.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
