TfL Ref: FOI-3025-1718
Thank you for your email received by us on 23 January 2018 asking for information about station closures.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you require.
We understand that it is absolutely essential for our customers that we provide the services they expect when they expect them. We are therefore working hard to ensure that station closures are kept to an absolute minimum.
Whilst unfortunate, full station closures generally occur for a short period of time, with the vast majority being under ten minutes, due to customer incidents or unforeseen staff absence where it has not always been possible to provide immediate staff cover at short notice.
When busy, generally during times of service disruption or events, the station may be subject to congestion control and part of this involves holding customers at one or more entrances. The station is still open but customer entry is restricted to avoid overcrowding on the platforms.
Across the network, station closures have been reduced by around a third compared to five years ago, but we fully recognise there is more to do and are working to drive this down further.
Please see the information you have requested attached. There were a total of 1,375 closures in 2017 of which 1,288 were Full Station and 87 Partial Station closures which were recorded. Of these, 475 closures were due to Industrial Action held between 8-9 January 2017.
This data includes all information contained on our databases. For the purposes of our reporting, Partial Station Closures are defined as follows:
