FOI request detail

Unstaffed Stations

Request ID: FOI-3023-1920
Date published: 07 February 2020

You asked

For the period of January 2019 to December 2019 please provide data on how many occasions LUL stations were unstaffed by LUL licensed staff for a period of 30mins or longer. In total, taking into account all of the above individual instances, how long (cumulatively) were stations unstaffed for in hours? If the addition of this second question would take this request over the reasonable limit for time/cost, please disregard this second question and view the formal request as only comprising of the first.

We answered

Our Ref:         FOI-3023-1920

Thank you for your request received on 9 January 2020 asking for information about unstaffed London Underground stations.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you require.

From 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2019 there were 1,122 instances where stations were unstaffed for 30 minutes or more, which totalled 5,680 hours and 06 minutes. This does not include scheduled meal breaks.

We also publish the duration of unscheduled unstaffed instances as a percentage of our operating hours for each calendar month on our website. This information currently goes up to May 2019 but will be updated in due couese:

https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/underground-services-performance

We are committed to staffing all stations while trains are running. There are, however, a number of reasons that there may be times during the day that staff are not visible on the platform or in the ticket hall. These include meal breaks, travelling between stations, or station inspections. The amount of time stations are unstaffed remains a very small proportion of overall operating hours.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for some reason, please feel free to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
