We answered

Our ref: FOI-3018-2425/GH

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 19 December 2024 asking for information about Northwood Hills Southbound Departure Board.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.

  1. In the last 24 months how many faults were reported regarding the southbound departure board. –

There have been 4 faults:

  1. 55866438 – Date Reported: 14/12/2022;  Date Restored: 07/02/2023
  2. 56053366 – Date Reported: 12/11/2023;  Date Restored: Unable to work on the VEID as it is unsafe to work upon.
  3. 56090158 – Date Reported: 15/01/2024;  Date Restored: Duplicate of the fault above
  4. 56157316 – Date Reported: 28/05/2024;  Date Restored: Ongoing

All of these faults have been experienced due to water ingress into VEID the (Visual Electronic Information Display) as a result of degraded structure supporting the VEID. The last fault has caused the VEID to be completely faulty resulting in a replacement VEID to be installed in summer of 2024. However as the structure is still degraded, it is still causing water ingress into the replacement VEID so fault 53157316 is still ongoing until the structure is repaired (which is in hand and a contractor is working on that). Until the structure is repaired, water is still entering into the replacement VEID so it cannot be safely powered up at the moment.

  1. For how many months in the last 24 months has the southbound departure board not been functioning.

It seems that the VEID has not functioned since November 2023.

  1. A list of the faults reported in the last 24 months regarding the southbound departure board

As detailed in response to question 1.

  1. Estimated time until the current fault is repaired

We estimate it may take another 8 weeks for the canopy design to be amended and structure repaired to prevent further water damage.

  1. Costs incurred in the last 24 months linked to repairing the southbound departure board.

We do not have a full breakdown of the costs incurred as much of this work has been done by LUL Signals engineers re-using VEIDs from other stations (where it was redundant).

  1. Age of the display equipment on the southbound platform

Approximately 20 years.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
