TfL Ref: FOI-2952-1819

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request of 3rd February 2019 asking for information about the TfL ill-health pension fund.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require. Your questions are answered in turn below:

Question 1: How many employees were given ill health pension in the last 3 years?

Answer: 286 over the 3 years to 31/12/2018

Question 2: Are employees under obligation to notify pension funds if an employee subsequently recover from illness for which they were granted ill health pension?

Answer: If a member is in receipt of an ill-health pension, the Fund requires the member to tell us if the total of their current earnings when added to their pension exceeds the greater of the reference earnings figure (currently £33,700 - this is increased annually by earnings inflation) and 150% of their current pension. There is no specific requirement to inform the Trustees if they recover. However, if they do contact the Trustees the pension will be subject to a review.

Question 3: Is the ill health pension terminated or does the employee continue to receive ill health pension when an employee recover from the ill health for which they were granted ill health pension initially?

Answer: If following a medical review they no longer meet the conditions to be eligible for an ill health pension this will be referred to the Trustees to determine whether the pension be suspended or reduced. If they continue to meet the conditions to be eligible then other earnings will be taken into account and the pension may be reduced.
