I would like to know the planned depth of the crossrail 2 tunnel in SW18 3RJ, and any commitments to reductions of noise and vibration to residential properties there. Thank you for your requests received on 7 February 2023 asking for information about Crossrail 2.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we hold some of the information you require. You asked:

•           I would be grateful for information on which is the correct route. Will the route run underneath Baskerville road
•           I would like to know the planned depth of the crossrail 2 tunnel in SW18 3RJ, and any commitments to reductions of noise and vibration to residential properties there.
•           I would like to know the estimated noise and vibration impacts to properties overlying the safeguarded land in that postcode and others throughout wandswoeth.

The route option link that has been selected takes one to a route map which was used to support the route-wide consultation event. This shows a number of route options, in the South Tooting / Balham area for example, and a number of proposed worksite changes. We are still awaiting DfT / Secretary of State decisions on these options. The information is still posted on the Crossrail 2 website as it is still part of the scheme history and can also inform / be read in conjunction with the subsequent consultation reports and response to issues raised.

These route options are different to the route as Safeguarded in the 2015 Crossrail 2 Safeguarding Directions confirmed by the Secretary of State which remain in force.

The funding agreement with Government of 31 October 2020 includes a commitment in relation to Crossrail 2 that TfL “prioritises safeguarding activity and brings an orderly end to consultancy work as soon as possible. The Department for Transport (DfT) will support such safeguarding activity for this project as required”. Other than continuing to safeguard the scheme the Crossrail 2 Integrated Project Team has been disbanded and the safeguarding of the project is undertaken within the wider TfL City Planning remit.

A confirmed route for Crossrail 2 was not finalised before work ceased, therefore we do not hold the information requested in your requests regarding the route and possible noise and vibrations that might have been experienced.

The postcode search page specifically highlights the need to use capital letters when undertaking a postcode search and uses an example of how a postcode should be entered. If capital letters are inputted as instructed then the postcode property search returns a “yes” for the postcode you have specified as the property might be affected by the Crossrail 2 Safeguarding Directions.

The construction of the Elizabeth line did cause noise and vibration in some locations. This was controlled as far as possible from within the construction site, however, there were circumstances in which noise impacts arose that needed to be alleviated further. These would have been instances where construction noise was persistently over the 25dB threshold referenced by this constituent.

We are not aware of any reports of significant noise or noise measured above 25dB since operational services commenced on the Elizabeth line.
