Crossrail stations

Request ID: FOI-2852-1718
Date published: 02 February 2018

You asked

1. Please provide details that TfL holds of the size, in terms of square metres, of the former construction sites, for the newly built Crossrail stations. I would especially welcome information relating to Bond Street, Custom House, Farringdon Street and Liverpool Street. 2. Please provide any information that TfL holds for the size of the construction sites (construction site areas), in terms of square metres, that existed for the stations built as part of the Jubilee Line extension, in particular Westminster, Bermondsey and Southwark.

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-2852-1718

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 11 January 2018 asking for information about construction sites.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we hold some of the information you require.

I can confirm that Crossrail Ltd (CRL) does hold the information you requested and it is already in the public domain. Details of all the station construction sites are shown on the Crossrail Information Plans.

The Near You page on the Crossrail website includes links to all these information plans. To access these

  1. Open the Near You page - http://www.crossrail.co.uk/route/near-you/?xmin=-0.6686166381830054&ymin=51.31260891734567&xmax=0.21028961181581002&ymax=51.677259072743475

  2. Open the pull down menu “Show Me” – check Stations, Route, Information Plans

  3. Zoom in to the appropriate location – the Information Plans show as shaded rectangles along the route.

  4. Click on the Plan next to the appropriate Station – click on “more information” the Plan opens - note these are large pdf files.

  5. The station work sites are shown hatched.  You can then calculate the dimensions using the scale on the drawing.

You should be aware that these are the worksites as at the date on the Information Plan.  During the course of each contract some of the works areas have had to be altered to incorporate additional works or carry out other activities such as traffic management.

In relation to the equivalent information for the Jubilee Line extension plans, we do not hold this information in an easily accessible format. Whilst we can not be certain that the actual construction site sizes will be held, we expect that, if it is held, the information would be held in our archived records due to the time that has elapsed since its creation. Locating and collating the relevant information from archived material would require us to recall several boxes from storage and manually review the paperwork for anything that may provide the information you require. It would be difficult to determine at what point we could satisfy ourselves that the information was not held once the process of reviewing the archived information is underway.

We therefore estimate that this process would exceed the cost limit, however since you have stated your interest is in relation to the Bakerloo Line extension, please be aware that the calculations used to inform the likely size of worksites for the Bakerloo line extension are based on those for the Northern Line extension, not the Jubilee, as this is much more current.

If you are still interested in the Jubilee Line extension material, please find our online catalogue at the following link, which you can use to search for any material that may be of interest, as well as details about our collections: http://www.tflcorporatearchivescatalogue.co.uk/CalmViewA/Default.aspx?

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for some reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
