Scrappage scheme

Request ID: FOI-2850-2324
Date published: 18 December 2023

You asked

Please tell me, how many TX4 taxis have been scrapped under the current scrappage scheme?

We answered

Our ref:           FOI-2850-2324/GH

Thank you for clarifying your request about the Scrappage scheme.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations (EIR) and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.

The following rules apply for taxis to access the scrappage scheme:
  • Taxis that are currently licensed by TfL are exempt from the ULEZ and therefore not eligible for the scrappage scheme

TfL's taxi delicensing scheme was launched in 2017 to support taxi drivers who wanted to delicense Euro 3, 4 or 5 vehicles.

The scheme successfully removed over 4,000 older and more polluting vehicles from our fleet, by making payments to those delicensing a vehicle. This has supported our aim to reduce air pollution in London and is now closed.

  • Taxis that were previously licensed by TfL and that accessed the TfL taxi delicensing fund are not eligible for scrappage funding as they have already accessed TfL funding
  • Taxis that were previously licensed by TfL and did not access the delicensing fund are eligible for scrappage funding if:
    • The taxi stopped being licensed before 30 January 2022
    • They comply with all other scheme rules (e.g. be owned by a resident of London and have valid insurance, road tax and MOT)

Given the above rules, as of 6 December 2023, 32 TX4s have been scrapped under the current scrappage scheme.

If this is not the information you are looking for please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
