Registered Oyster Cards
Request ID: FOI-2829-1718
Date published: 22 March 2018
You asked
I am looking to find out: "How many Oyster cards used in 2017 were unregistered?"
Could I have the same data for 2016, 2015 and 2014 (or the corresponding financial years if this info is not available), and could I have it broken down by year?
We answered
Dear
TfL Ref: FOI-2829-1718
Thank you for your email received by us on 08 January 2018 asking for information about unregistered Oyster cards in 2017.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. You asked:
“I am looking to find out: "How many Oyster cards used in 2017 were unregistered?"
Could I have the same data for 2016, 2015 and 2014 (or the corresponding financial years if this info is not available), and could I have it broken down by year?”
72% of all Oyster cards, last used between 01 December 2017 and 11 January 2018, were not registered.
We only hold journey data at the Oyster card level for 8 weeks and only hold registration data at the time when the card was last used. Therefore the same figure cannot be calculated for previous years.
We regularly promote the benefits of registering your Oyster card to our customers at stations and via our website. Our new TfL app, which allows Oyster card users to check their pay as you go balance, purchase Travelcards and top up their card with just a few quick taps on their smartphone, also requires customers to register their Oyster card before they can use it.
If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
Yours sincerely
