I am undertaking some academic research into crimes on the London Bus Network and i need to clarify a few things regarding the data i receivedfrom CentreComm on Driver Incident Disturbances. Please may i have a contact number or email address for a contactin CentreComm? Alternatively i am happy for this email to be forwarded to someone in CentreComm who can clarify the following points:- • I would like to know what typical events classify as an 'Off bus disturbance'? • Whether 'youth disturbances' is on or off bus? and whether these affect the operation of the bus on its route? • Whether any other categories could be classified as 'Line of route crimes'?

We answered

TfL Ref: 2784-1819

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 11 January 2019 asking for information about driver incidents on buses.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold the information you require. Your request and our replies are as below:

  • I would like to know what typical events classify as an 'Off bus disturbance'?  Typically, these would be driver-observed events involving violence, arguments and/or confrontations with the potential to escalate into further disorder. It is a category used across our wider operational areas. The TfL control Centre staff choose the single most appropriate category to record these events under.
  • Whether 'youth disturbances' is on or off bus? and whether these affect the operation of the bus on its route? Youth disturbances can be on or off bus. These can affect operation of the bus as high-priority incidents might require the emergency services to attend. The bus could be damaged, delayed  or inconvenienced as a result, and lose scheduled mileage.
  • Whether any other categories could be classified as 'Line of route crimes'? We expect the TfL control Centre staff to classify these with the most appropriate classification codes. Other categories available include: Assault LBSL staff, Assault LBSL personal injury, assault crew member, assault crew personal injury, passenger assault, passenger assault with personal injury, assault by spitting, vandalism on bus, graffiti on bus, general disturbance on bus including youth and alcohol related disorder, fare disputes where evasion is noted rather than human error, theft from staff, crew or passengers, robbery on staff, crew or passenger and pickpocketing.

If this is not the information you are looking for, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
