TfL Ref: FOI-2780-2324

Thank you for your follow up request which we received on 2 November 2023, asking about station closures for period 8 (2021/22) to period 7 (2023/24).

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require.

The safety of our customers and staff is the top priority and we will never compromise on safety.  We aim to minimise station closures as much as possible and strive to always exhaust all avenues before making the decision to close a station. However, on some occasions it is unavoidable, and due to safety regulations require some of our stations to have a minimum number of staff; therefore, we are legally obligated to close a station if the numbers of available staff fall below this. When there are shortages, staff are often moved to ensure that stations with higher usage, step-free access, or interchange with other lines and services are prioritised. This approach can sometimes lead to more frequent closures at stations that don’t meet this criteria.

Please find the requested information in the attached spreadsheets and accompanying notes.

The data is based on the station being fully closed, meaning passengers are unable to enter or exit the station, whilst all train services continue to operate through the station without stopping, whereby passengers cannot interchange either. Delays are recorded for durations of two minutes or more. The data does not include planned station closures or closures due to industrial action.

Please note a station can be closed multiple times during a day. For example once at the start of the day, and then again at the end of the day. This is recorded as two separate closures.

Also note that timings and cause of closures may be subject to change, pending further review of the incidents.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
