Why is there no post with a push button on the south west side of this pedestrian crossing?

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 4th March 2022 asking for information about a pedestrian crossing at High Holborn.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.
Specifically you asked:
“High Holborn Pedestrian Crossing west of Kingsway Push Button Missing: Why is there no post with a push button on the south west side of this pedestrian crossing?”
It is not the case that there is no post with a push button at this location. Each crossing at the junction of High Holborn / Kingsway has a push button on the right hand side of the crossing. This is shown in the diagram below - pole number 1 has the push button to cross towards pole 3, and pole 17 is for the diagonal crossing labelled “H”. .
At signalised crossings the push button is placed on the right hand side of the crossing since visually impaired persons are taught to look for a push button to their right. This push button is also fitted with a tactile rotating cone to assist the visually impaired person in indicating that the green person is illuminated and that is it safe to start to cross the road. The crossing is also provided with tactile paving which guides the visual impaired person to the push button on the right hand side of the crossing.
