We answered
TfL Ref: 2769-1819
Thank you for your email received by us on 21 February 2019 asking for information about London Underground escalators and London Tram services.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require. You asked for:
i) how many escalators there are in each tube station
Please see the attached list for the number of escalators in each London Underground station, which are currently either in service or being maintained by us. This is inclusive of two escalators at Paddington that are within our care, although not being used for customer service.
ii) how many escalators have been out of use and for what period of time in the years 2016, 2017, 2018 and up to the present day
Please see refer to the escalator availability data based on annual percentages for each line published in our London Underground Performance Almanac below for further information and also our response to Question V:
https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/underground-services-performance#on-this-page-0
iii) I would also like to know how many trams there are owned and used by TFL for the years 2016, 2017 and 2018
Please see the attached table.
iv) how many times have the tram services been used in the years 2016,2017 and 2018?
The number of passenger journeys taken place on the London Trams network are listed below, which is published at: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/light-rail-and-tram-statistics
2015/16 - 27 million journeys
2016/17 - 29.5 million journeys
2017/18 - 29.1 million journeys
v) for how long have any of the trams been out of use in the years 2016, 2017 and 2018?
A tram can be out for a variety of reasons from maintenance to upgrades and damage from third parties. However, when it is out for any kind of maintenance or upgrade it is replaced by a spare tram.
Please see the attached data for the number of days a tram has been out of service based on a threshold of six days or more and reasons why.
To collate a list providing the numbers of London Underground escalators out of use and for how long during 2016, 2017, 2018 to present, in addition to listing every tram taken out of service, the latter of which happens daily, would exceed the ‘appropriate limit’ of £450 set by the Freedom of Information (Appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations 2004.
Under section 12 of the FOI Act, we are not obliged to comply with a request if we estimate that the cost of determining whether we hold the information, locating and retrieving it and extracting it from other information would exceed the appropriate limit. This is calculated at £25 per hour for every hour spent on the activities described.
To help bring the cost of responding to your request within the £450 limit, you may wish to consider narrowing its scope so that we can more easily locate, retrieve and extract the information you are seeking. If you want to refine your request or make a Freedom of Information Act request in future, please bear in mind that the Freedom of Information Act allows you to request recorded information held by us. You should identify the information that you want as clearly and concisely as you can, specifying the types of document that you are looking for. You might also consider limiting your request to a particular period of time, geographical area or specific departments of the organisation.
Although your request can take the form of a question, rather than a request for specific documents, we do not have to answer your question if it would require the creation of new information or the provision of a judgement, explanation, advice or opinion that was not already recorded at the time of your request.
If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
Yours sincerely
