We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-2760-1819

Thank you for your request received by TfL on 21st January 2019 asking for information about the TfL vehicle fleet.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require. Your questions are answered in turn below:

Set of questions 1:

Is TfL continuing to buy/acquire diesel or petrol vans for its fleet?

Yes - however, we are ensuring that all new vans will be Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) compliant.

Is TfL continuing to buy/acquire diesel or petrol cars for its fleet?

Our first preference is for electric cars or petrol hybrid cars where an electric car isn’t operationally viable. No diesel cars are purchased into the fleet any longer. All new cars will be ULEZ compliant.

Is TfL continuing to buy/acquire any other diesel or petrol vehicles for its fleet?

Yes, however these Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV’s) will be ULEZ compliant.

Set of questions 2:

Does TfL have any policies/ plans about the fuel type of vehicles when acquiring new vehicles for its fleet?

Yes.

If yes: please provide:

We will be following the guidelines set out in the London Environment Strategy published in May 2018 (https://www.london.gov.uk/sites/default/files/london_environment_strategy_0.pdf). We will be working to achieve compliance with the Ultra Low Emission Zone and working towards:

  • all cars in GLA group support fleets being zero emission capable by 2025

  • all new cars and vans (less than 3.5 tonnes) in GLA group fleets, including response vehicles, being zero emission capable from 2025

  • all heavy vehicles (greater than 3.5 tonnes) in GLA group fleets being fossil fuel-free from 2030

  • zero emission GLA fleets by 2050

Set of questions 3:

Does TfL have a policy on vehicle fuel types used by its contractors/suppliers?

No specific policy - but we would expect suppliers to meet the ULEZ requirements if they cross the boundary.

If no: is TfL considering introducing a policy? Please give details.

Currently complying with ULEZ forms a part of the specifications where applicable, and all vehicles must meet the ULEZ standards.
