Thank you for your Freedom of Information request received on 16th January 2019 asking for information about incidents of passengers falling between the train and platform on the Underground since 2006.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require. Your questions are answered in turn below:
Question 1: Please can you provide me with a yearly breakdown of:
- How many incidents of people falling between the train and the platform have occurred since 2006?
- How many passenger interface incidents has TfL recorded since 2006?
Note that the Tube handles up to 5 million passenger journeys per day and the safety and welfare of all our customers and staff is paramount. Incidents of our customers being injured getting on and off Tube trains are rare, and the vast majority of incidents result in either no injuries or only minor injuries being caused. Major injuries are very rare and account for fewer than 2% of all incidents (one for about every 16,700,000 journeys made on the tube). While the Tube is rightly recognised as one of the safest metros in the world, we are not complacent and take every opportunity to improve safety for customers getting on and off trains. We continue to look for solutions to accidents related to the gap between the train and platform, especially at stations that pose particular challenges. It is also something we consider when designing large infrastructure modernisation and rolling stock replacement programmes. Customer awareness campaigns take place throughout the year to reduce instances of customers rushing and getting caught in the doors or falling in the gap between the platform and train. Continuing to improve our record on safety is a key consideration in our plans to modernise the Tube.

Answer 1B: The table below shows all PTI incidents over the same period (this includes passengers falling between train and platform but also all other incidents at the platform/train interface, such as passengers caught in doors; contact between the passenger and the train either when moving or stationary; and trips and falls alighting or boarding but where the passenger does not end up between train and platform).
