Cycleway Signage Guideline for multiple cycleways that have shared sections

Request ID: FOI-2754-2223
Date published: 13 February 2023

You asked

The current cycleway signage guidelines on TfL's website (https://content.tfl.gov.uk/cycleways-signing-guidance.pdf) only showing scenarios that a cycle path is signed with one cycleway number. There had been scenarios that a cycle path might be shared within different cycleways. (For example: C6/C27 between Judd Street and Pakenham St., as well as in Waltham Forest between C23/C27 between Argall and Lea Bridge). I would like to request for a guideline that shows how these will be signed.

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 25th January 2023 asking for information about cycleway signage.

Specifically you asked:

I can confirm that we hold the information you require.

The signage guidance states the following, which sets out that shared numbering will be by exception:

“Only one route number will be applied on any section of road (exceptions may be made where shared sections are under 400m and / or where there are no adjoining roads on the shared section”.

We hold no further guidelines on this matter.

If this is not the information you are looking for please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
