Request ID: FOI-2750-1920
Date published: 07 January 2020

You asked

Putney Bridge station was closed down on the morning of April 12 this year. According to the District line Twitter feed it was due to a "building issue".  Please could you tell me the exact reason for the closure? What was the purpose of the building works?  Who was the building contractor commissioned with the work?  Thanks,

During an inspection of Putney Bridge Tube station we found some damaged asbestos, which was situated in a closed and disused part of the station building. We have strict controls in place, in line with the Control of Asbestos Regulations (2012), meaning customers and staff are not at risk from exposure to asbestos when travelling on the Underground. Safety of our staff and the public is extremely important to us, so as a precautionary measure we took the decision to close the station for a few hours to ensure we had a safe environment for all those working and passing through the station. The closure allowed 4-Rail Services Ltd., an accredited asbestos management company, to survey the room and to undertake air quality tests. These tests indicated there was no risk from asbestos to staff or customers and the station was reopened.
