Post fatal collision - highways engineering assessment

Request ID: FOI-2741-1718
Date published: 23 January 2018

You asked

Back in 2015 there was a hit and run incident at the corner of Dr Johnson Avenue and Tooting Bec Road resulting in a fatality. The police case has now come to term and has been reported here: http://www.wandsworthguardian.co.uk/news/15788895.Wimbledon_man_sentenced_over_fatal_hit_and_run_in_Tooting_Bec/ Please show the outcome of any highways engineering assessment that has been done following this fatality. If we are to design risk to As Low As Reasonably Possible (ALARP), then each time a life is lost it is important we try to learn how we can reduce risk for the future. I will put forward the same request to Wandsworth Council, as they are the other relevant highways authority who manage the rest of Dr Johnson Avenue.

Our ref: FOI-2741-1718/GH

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 22 December 2017 asking for information about a collision that occurred in 2015.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.

In May 2015 the police attended the site of the collision and provided the following report to TfL:

“I had a look at the Tooting Bec Road / Dr Johnson Avenue junction last week. My only concern is the mature tree located very close to the junction - this can be viewed clearly on Google Maps. However, having spent some time at the junction observing traffic movements the tree did not appear to be causing any problems with sight lines. Collision stats also show just one recorded collision at the junction, and that involved a trailer becoming detached from one vehicle and striking another vehicle approaching from the other direction.

I am therefore happy that the junction does not need any improvements.”

We are saddened by the fatality at Tooting Bec Road / Dr Johnson Avenue junction and extend our thoughts and well wishes to the family and friends of Mr Awale. The safety of all road users is TfL’s top priority and TfL regularly reviews its road network to ensure it remains as safe as possible.  As no concerns regarding the junction were raised by the police after their site visit no further assessments were carried out by TfL.

If this is not the information you are looking for please do not hesitate to contact me.

If you are not satisfied with this response please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
