Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 24 January 2023 asking for information about the junction of A2 Blackheath Hill with Lewisham Road and Greenwich South Street SE10.
Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold some of the information you require.
From 1st January 2018 to 31st January 2023 please give the number of reports of incidents with information on injuries caused at this unsafe junction
The latest processed data we have is to the end September 2022, therefore we cannot provide data to the end of January 2023 as requested - this information will be available later in the year.
From January 2018 to September 2022 there have been 31 personal injury collisions recorded at this location, these resulted in 38 people being injured – please see the table below:

What plans are in place to improve safety for pedestrians crossing at this junction and when will these take effect including a timescale for completed works?
TfL currently has a scheme on the Healthy Streets programme to install a straight over signalised pedestrian crossing from the south side of Blackheath Hill to the triangular island. The crossing from the triangular island to the footway will remain unsignalized but there will be a raised table to reduce the speed of traffic using the slip road. This scheme was paused for a couple of years due to lack of TfL funding during the pandemic but is progressing again now. Providing crossings on the other arms has been investigated in the past but unfortunately was not feasible due to the low numbers of pedestrians compared to the huge impact it would have on buses and other vehicles. It is anticipated that the public consultation on the new crossing will happen in April 2023 with delivery of the crossing sometime in 2024.
How will these plans incorporate safer turns for motorists when queuing up Blackheath Hill to turn right into Greenwich South Street such as a filter light? Vision here is obstructed with cars turning into Lewisham Road in the other direction, how will this issue be addressed?
The scheme does not plan to install an indicative arrow in either direction. However the parking / loading bay on the corner of Greenwich South Street / Blackheath Road will be removed which aims to make the right turn into Greenwich South Street easier especially for large vehicles.
