TfL Ref: FOI-2734-1920
Thank you for your clarified request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 19 December 2019 asking for information about fare evasion.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our Information Access Policy. You asked:
Please provide estimated fare evasion rates and levels by transport mode for all TfL modes for the two most recent fiscal years . If possible, please also provide statistics for London mainline trains within the TfL zones.
It is estimated that TfL loses approximately £116m each year across all of our public transport services as a result of fare evasion and ticket fraud. This is money which could and should be invested in growing our network and improving the travel experience for our customers.
The below table shows the estimated fare evasion rates for the current financial year and in 2018/19, for all TfL modes. Please note that different methods are used to estimate fare evasion rates in each mode. For this reason we would caution against making direct comparisons between the respective figures. We do not hold fare evasion data for mainline trains.
