FOI request detail

Usage of 154 bus

Request ID: FOI-2732-1819
Date published: 05 February 2019

You asked

I would like to know, for the 2018 calendar year, if TfL has day-by-day data for the number of passengers tapping on to the 154 bus. Specifically, I would like this data for passengers tapping in at all bus stops from West Croydon bus station to the bus stop at Stafford Road/Woodcote Road. That should be 19 bus stops in total. I would like this data set out separately for both directions of the journey.

We answered

TfL Ref: 2732-1819

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 17 January 2019 asking for information about passenger usage of the 154 bus route.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold the information you require.

Please find attached the requested information.  This data represents daily bus boarding taps, by stop and by day for route 154 in the 2018 calendar year, also showing the direction of travel. We have provided all stops along the route. The stops you are particularly interested in can be taken from this dataset as necessary. Please note the following points and caveats when looking at the data:

  • This data has been taken from our ticketing system and represents Oyster and contactless validations on the reader as customers board the bus. Any customers not validating a ticket (e.g. young children not required to tap) will not be shown in the data.

  • All instances of daily taps less than 5 at a bus stop have been rounded up to 5 to prevent individuals’ personal travel information to be protected.

  • The directions are as follow:
  • Inbound is towards West Croydon Bus Station

  • Outbound is towards Morden Station

  • Unknown is where, in rare cases, taps in the ticketing system have not been assigned a designated direction.

Please note that in accordance with TfL’s obligations under Data Protection legislation some personal data has been removed, as required by section 40(2) of the FOI Act. This is because disclosure of this personal data would be a breach of the legislation, specifically the first principle which requires all processing of personal data to be fair and lawful. It would not be fair to disclose this personal information when the individuals have no expectation it would be disclosed and TfL has not satisfied one of the conditions which would make the processing ‘fair’.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
