Diversity pedestrian traffic signals at Trafalgar Square

Request ID: FOI-2672-1718
Date published: 26 January 2018

You asked

The diversity pedestrian traffic signals at various locations in Trafalgar Square are not in the current or older versions of the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions. I would like you to forward me a copy of the Department for Transport authorisation or other authorisation that allows these images to be used on the traffic signals at Trafalgar Square.

We answered

Our Ref:          FOI-2672-1718

Thank you for your request received on 18 December 2017 asking for information about the diversity pedestrian traffic signals at Trafalgar Square.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act and TfL’s information access policy.

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT+) pedestrian green signals at Trafalgar Square were installed nearly two years ago in advance of London’s Pride celebrations. Formal DfT approval was not sought as it was not intended that these symbols will become a standard treatment. A thorough risk assessment was carried out prior to their installation and were deemed safe for use as they are applied to the green aspect only. The signals were manufactured and installed without cost to TfL, and have been well received by Londoners and the press. They are a temporary installation and we continue to keep them under review.

Please accept our apologies that we are unable to assist you further on this occasion.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
