You asked
Hi I would like to know what the efficiency of the London Underground trains are, how full they are on average, how many people they could carry compared to how many people the do. If this could also be done for London buses that would be great.
We answered
Our ref: FOI-2664-1718
Thank you for your request of 18 December 2017, asking for information about the efficiency of London Underground trains and London Buses.
Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy.
Unfortunately we do not hold the information you require. We do not measure efficiency by the number of passengers carried on trains or buses. Services are operated on a timetable, and we measure efficiency by how many services operated on time.
We strive to provide more frequent services where possible, as we do not want to run overcrowded trains, although many services are extremely busy during peak hours. Assessing efficiency by how full a train is, would also not be an effective measure during off peak times. We run services late into the evening, and from very early morning, and on some tube lines, we operate all night services at weekends. These services are used by many people, but the trains operate at well short of their capacity during these times.
I hope this clarifies our position, and I am sorry that we cannot assist you further on this occasion.
If you are not satisfied with this response please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.
Yours sincerely
