Our Ref:         FOI-2643-2122

Thank you for your request received on 17 February 2022 asking for information about average remuneration of London Underground train operators.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you require. You asked for:

Please could you state the average salary of a TfL Underground train operator/driver from 2011 to 2021. Could you accompany the data with the year on year increase or decrease of the salary and the number of drivers or operators for that year.

Please find the requested information attached. Please note that where no data is shown for a particular year, this is because the position did not exist during those years.

The increase or decrease can be calculated by looking at the year on year figures.

Please note that Night Tube operators were recruited on a part-time basis. The 2020/21 Night Tube salary is significantly higher due to the fact that many operators were seconded to full time to support the reduced Train Operator availability during COVID. In 2021 they were offered the opportunity to join the full-time driver pool on a permanent basis, with Night Tube duties spread across all drivers. A number of drivers have been able to stay part-time at their own request, with some of them moving to part-time positions during the day service to help balance their work and personal lives. No Tube driver has or will lose their job as a result of these changes, nor has any driver been forced to switch to part- or full-time work if they do not want to.

I would also like the highest offered wage across TfL for the same time period on a year to year basis

Information on the highest remuneration received each year across TfL is available in our Annual Reports published on our website:

In accordance with section 21 of the FOI Act, we are not obliged to supply you with a copy of the requested information as it is already accessible to you elsewhere.
