Bus waiting times
Request ID: FOI-2637-1920
Date published: 30 March 2020
You asked
With regard to the requests for excess waiting time and the minimum standard waiting time for each of the routes W7, W5, W3, 91 and 41, could I please request that you provide these on a daily basis if the breakdown into hourly figures is contributing to the amount of time this would take?
We answered
Our ref: FOI-2637-1920
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 23 November 2019 asking for information about buses.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our Information Access Policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you requested. You asked:
With regard to the requests for excess waiting time and the minimum standard waiting time for each of the routes W7, W5, W3, 91 and 41, could I please request that you provide these on a daily basis if the breakdown into hourly figures is contributing to the amount of time this would take?
We have managed to collate the hourly information you previously requested.
Please find attached Bus Speeds data for routes 41, 91, W3, W5 and W7 between dates 23/09/2019 and 20/10/2019.
The files show hourly performance (Excess Wait Time - EWT) for each route between hours 5 and 23 summarised for each direction and hour.
The EWT is calculated at certain locations defined for each route, not at each bus stop.
The EWT derives from the headways between buses. The longer headways the greater EWT would be.
Some hours/locations may show no data meaning the buses ran on diversion and did not serve the location at that time or the data got excluded from EWT calculations.
Each route is assigned with specific Minimum Performance Standard (MPS):
41 – 1.10
91 – 1.20
W3 – 1.00
W5 – 1.00
W7 – 0.80
Route performance less than the MPS is considered better than the standard. Route performance greater than the MPS is considered worse than the standard.
The MPS is applied to routes quarterly, not daily.
The Bus Speeds tab shows average daily bus speeds for Morning and Evening Peaks.
“Observed Speed” is average speeds between departure from one stop and arrival at the next stop.
“Observed Speed (with dwell time)” is average speed that includes time buses spend at each bus stop.
All speeds are in Miles per Hour (MPH).
